ISTD ESSEX REGIONAL QUALIFIER
ISTD Regional Competitions – Essex 1
The ISTD hosts Regional Dance Competitions throughout the year, giving dancers the exciting opportunity to qualify for the Grand Finals in October.

At each regional event, dancers will compete in the following categories:
Set Dance
All age groups are taught a national ‘set’ routine — meaning every dancer across the country performs the same choreography. Depending on age and level, this may be Street, Lyrical or Disco, and will be taught in class.
Qualification: Top 3 dancers qualify for Nationals.
Dress Code: Style-appropriate costumes — patterns and mixed fabrics allowed, but no sparkles.
Rock & Roll
Danced in pairs, performing a Rock & Roll routine learned in class or through private lessons.
Qualification: 1st place qualifies for Grand Finals.
Dress Code: No restrictions.
Teams
Our academy teams will compete to qualify — attendance is expected from all team members.
U12 Team – First Edition
U16 Team – Unleashed
Disco Solo
Dancers compete individually within their age and exam category, performing a routine learned in class.
Dress Code: ISTD-approved solo wear — plain fabrics, no sparkles.
Disco Pairs
The same format as Disco Solo, but danced with a partner.
Rules at the competition:
• Numbers should be front for set dance then worn on the back for all other dances.
• Make-Up – none for U10s.
• No acrobatics in any event
•Use of recording equipment is not permitted at any Disco freestyle competition e.g., video cameras / phone cameras etc. This also includes live broadcasts on Social Media Platforms and Video calls
• Suitable footwear compulsory for RnR (Jazz shoes) & Street (Trainers)
• No dance school logos or uniform to be worn.
What to wear:
Rock & Roll Pairs:
Rock and Roll Dresses
Jazz shoes must be worn
& Leg warmers.
Set Dance:
Depends on the style of dance for the age category.
No sparkles, different materials and patterns allowed
No pocketed trousers in street dance (combats etc)
No inappropriate outfits.
Disco Pairs:
For Beginners outfits have to be plain and block colours.
Lycra or Velvet. No sparkle or Lace.
Its recommended no skirts/dresses or loose fitting clothing
Disco Solo:
Same as disco pairs, if you are a beginner it is plain wear.
